This painting is Agatha Tiegel Hanson (1873-1959). She was the first Deaf woman to graduate from Gallaudet College with a four-year degree. She was at the top of the class. At the graduation commencement in 1893, she was a Valedictorian. She delivered her address, “The Intellect of Women”, a very powerful presentation. This is important to remember her because she delivered this address twenty-seven years before women could vote in the United States.
